Used OEM vs. new aftermarket parts: which one should you buy?

Buying tips Β· November 1, 2026 Β· 3 min read

When an appliance part fails, you usually have three choices: a new original (OEM) part, a new aftermarket copy, or a used OEM part taken from another appliance. Each has pros and cons.

New OEM parts

Made by or for the appliance brand. They fit exactly and are new, but they are often the most expensive option, and some older parts are no longer made.

New aftermarket parts

Made by other companies to fit your appliance. They are cheaper, but quality varies a lot. Fit and long-term reliability can be hit or miss, especially for electronic boards.

Used OEM parts

The original part, taken from a working appliance. You get factory quality and an exact fit at a lower price. The trade-off: the part has been used before, so it is not brand new.

Our rule of thumb

  • Control boards and electronics: used OEM is often the best value, since aftermarket boards can be unreliable.
  • Simple wear parts (belts, rollers, seals): new is usually the better choice.
  • Discontinued parts: used OEM may be the only option left.
Always compare the part number on your old part with the number in the listing. Same number means the same part.
